Byte Communications is a San Francisco web development firm. We design, develop, and maintain fast, modern websites and web applications across a range of industries — and we've been working in online communication since 1993.
Our story
From bulletin boards to the modern web.
Byte Communications was founded in San Francisco in 1993, at the dawn of the consumer internet. In 1994 the firm launched ByteNet Online — a community bulletin board system that grew out of an earlier local board and connected people long before social media existed. It ran until 2005, and is preserved today as a memorial at bytenet.com.
As the web matured, so did the firm. Today Byte Communications builds with modern tools — static site generators, edge platforms, and progressive web apps — applying three decades of experience in online communication to projects across automotive, healthcare, civic data, and real estate.

Byte Communications is led by Douglas Raggett. A registered nurse by training, Douglas spent a long career in bedside care and clinical research before turning to web development full time — a path that gives the firm a particular fluency where healthcare meets technology.
That dual background shows up directly in the work, from a San Francisco clinic's website to a progressive web app for tracking neurological symptoms, alongside projects spanning automotive, civic data, and real estate. He has been building and running online communities since 1994, and brings the same attention to every project the firm takes on.
